Communications Equipment
Green purchasing guidance for communications equipment, including:
- Cell Phones
- Satellite telephones
- Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)
Required specifications
Purchasers must include these specifications, unless not possible:
- All applicable electronics must be listed on the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool Registry (EPEAT Registry) at the Bronze level or higher; or
- Meet another environmental standard that reduces the use of hazardous substances (e.g., the EU’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive)
- All mobile phones must be on the EPEAT Registry at the Bronze level, unless it is unavailable for a specific application
Preferred specifications
Purchasers should include these specifications, unless not possible:
- Electronics on the EPEAT Registry at the Silver or Gold level are eligible for a purchasing preference of at least 5%
- Mobile phones listed on the EPEAT Registry with a Silver or Gold rating are eligible for price preferences of 5% and 10%, respectively
- If EPEAT-registered or TCO-certified communications equipment is not available, priority should be given to products that are on the ENERGY STAR certification list and/or that are RoHS-compliant.
